All edges marbled; top edge dust darkened, as expected. Beautifully marbled EPs. Binder's mark in gilt to inner-dentelle of top board. Previous owner's tag pasted at top corner of front-pastedown; same owner's period signature at centre of title page. Toning to pasted EPs from binder's glue. Binding starting at front gutter; textblock and cords entirely secure. Title page slightly dust dirtied; light edge-wear to fore-edge. Title page with a modern 4593 written in blue ink crossed out (call number?). Some foxing early and late, restricted mostly to margins; else majority of textblock remarkably bright and clean. The binder, E.R. Fabre & Co. was headed by Édouard-Raymond Fabre (1799-1854) of Montreal. Fabre is generally recognized as the first tradesman in Lower Canada, having trained as a bookseller in Paris. Throughout his life, Fabre's career extended far beyond the biblio-world, serving as a member of the Patriotic Union and the Société Saint Jean Baptiste. A longtime friend and advisor of the infamous Louis-Joseph Papineau, Fabre was also politically active, serving as the mayor of Montréal from 1848-1851. A scarce title in a unique and striking 19th century binding by a renowned Québec figure. This truly is a Canadian bibliophile's dream.
